PIANO LESSONS

ABOUT MY TEACHING STYLE

PROFESSIONAL PIANIST | PIANO TEACHER | MUSIC ARRANGER | COMPOSER

Teacher

Hi! My name is Laura Reynolds, and I have been teaching piano professionally since 2005 - first in Las Vegas and Houston, now in Austin, and online.

During my music career, I have noticed there are two linear ways of thinking when it comes to teaching and learning music:

  1. You are either an improviser and mostly play by ear

  2. You can read and play classical pieces as the composer intended

But rarely are BOTH found, encouraged, and blended in music lessons.

When I wanted to play soundtracks and popular songs, creatively arrange, and compose my music, little of that was taught or encouraged until much later in my education.

So when I began teaching piano, I wanted my studio to focus on a more well-rounded approach to music education. I want my students to discover all aspects of music and decide who they are as musicians.

My piano lessons focus on giving students the tools needed to play many different music genres, improvise, compose or write a song, and especially have the theory to understand how to use it all where it matters - in their music.

Teacher, Music Arranger, and Sheet Music for Students

As a piano teacher first, I arrange popular songs into sheet music beginner piano students can easily learn.

I love making these because they reinforce learned concepts from our lessons like:

  • chord structures

  • new rhythms

  • new notes and the relationship between each other

  • key signatures

  • scales

These beginner versions integrate with music lessons and method books and open their eyes to the fact that those music theory ideas not only apply to classical music and technique but ALL music.

Having the ability to see and apply this gives them a new appreciation for music and also makes students stronger musicians.

Composing in the Classroom

I’m also a composer and encourage my students to express their creative side through improvisation and songwriting projects each year. Each student’s compositions have guidelines to help them progress and are adapted to the level each student is currently performing at each year.
